What did you see when you first looked at the title of this post – nowhere? Didn’t pay attention? Look again.
Did you immediately see now here or no where?
I was first introduced to this concept at a summer camp as a kid. The camp director, Rev. John Ross, gave us all book marks that said, “opportunityisnowhere.” He asked us the same question. When I first looked at it, I saw opportunity is NOW here, while the majority of others saw opportunity is NOWHERE. I think that was the first time in my life that I realized I was/am an optimist.
A few years back (2013) I was sitting in the Canadian Rockies with 13 complete strangers on an 13 day backpacking trip. I had never traveled alone and I decided 8 days before the trip that I was going to start challenging myself to do things I always wanted to do but, for whatever reason, had not done, mostly because of fear. This trip allowed me to put my phone and computer away for two weeks and clear my head.
About midway through my trip I found myself laying on the floor of a canoe in the middle of a lake (just outside of Banff) watching a meteor shower. I thought about how amazing that moment was and the hundreds of other moments on my trip that I would have missed had I not challenged my own fear. I made a commitment to myself at that moment that I would no longer worry about not doing things I’ve always wanted to do because of fear. I had always thought about running and or starting my own brokerage firm, but always found excuses of why I should stay where I was.
I’m proud to say that moment on the lake inspired me to set a goal and timeline to go out on my own and build a commercial real estate brokerage company, Elford Realty, which was officially launched in January 2015 (18 months after my trip). Partnering with a long-time friend, Mike Fitzpatrick, and affiliating with a family-owned construction business that has been around for 106+ years provided the platform I was looking for to build and grow a commercial brokerage firm.
I’m excited to launch a new website after 2 years at Elford and it has been fun to see where we have come in two years. I’m proud to say that we are working on some of the most prominent and impactful projects in Columbus and with some of the most respected clients and partners, and it is exciting to think about what the future holds for Elford Realty. I have found out first-hand that what you believe impacts what you see, and what you see determines what you do.
There is nothing better than waking up each morning excited to start the day!
